Public opening celebration of Amor Muñoz's KaleidescopeElote with DJ music, chocolate and artist meet-and-greet.
Amor Muñoz's KaleidescopElote opens to the public at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts on Friday, October 23, from 6 to 9 PM. The opening is a celebration with DJ Drew on music, chocolate, and a chance to meet the artist in person. It's free to attend.
Muñoz is a self-taught, interdisciplinary artist based in Mexico City who works at the intersection of technology, craft, labor, and biology. For over fifteen years, she's combined experimental electronics with craft, turning the rigid language of engineering into something soft and tactile. She's been an artist-in-residence at La Becque in Switzerland, Bauhaus Dessau in Germany, and Google Arts & Culture in France, and her work has been shown at the Barbican Centre, SFMOMA, Ars Electronica, and the Havana Biennial. Her work is held in collections including SFMOMA, Kadist, and the Utah Museum of Fine Arts.
The show centers on corn—elotl in Nahuatl and elote in Spanish—which she treats as a carrier of memory and a living system of knowledge passed across generations. The centerpiece, KaleidescopElote, is an immersive installation of enlarged resin kernels that you can step inside. Once you're in, the sculpture becomes an observatory, a lighthouse, a seed bank, or an oracle, with an interactive digital kaleidoscope of stars and seeds and an augmented-reality sound experience that responds to your movement.
