Evening gathering to share Rumi poems and thoughts, moderated by Rasoul Shams on the anniversary of Rumi's passing.
Rasoul Shams is moderating a Rumi celebration at Golden Braid Books on Thursday, December 17, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM. It's an evening gathering to share Rumi's poems and thoughts, and the date is the point of the whole thing: December 17 is the anniversary of Rumi's passing. He died at sunset on December 17, 1273, a date that's been celebrated for centuries as Rumi's Night of Union.
Shams is the one leading the night, and he's got a long history with the poet. He founded the Rumi Poetry Club in 2007, on the 800th anniversary of Jalaluddin Rumi's birth. He first came across Rumi's poems in his Persian classes as a young boy in Iran, and the works of Rumi and other Persian poets have been his spiritual companions for decades. Since then, he's studied and lived in India, Japan, and the US.
He's written several books on Rumi, including Rumi: The Art of Loving, Rumi Essays: On the Life, Poetry, and Vision of the Greatest Persian Sufi Poet, The Words of Rumi, and Through Love Pain is Healed. The Rumi Poetry Club he runs celebrates the poetry and teachings of Rumi and other poets of the heart, nature, and spiritual life.
