Texas country and Americana songwriter Red Shahan plays The State Room with West Texas band Ronnie and The Redwoods, for an over-21 night.
Red Shahan plays The State Room on Saturday, October 24, with Ronnie and The Redwoods opening. It's a double bill of Texas songwriters coming through Salt Lake City, both with roots in the same part of the state.
Shahan was born in Bluff Dale, Texas, in the early 1980s, and he describes himself as a gritty Texas country, Americana, and soulful songwriter. He's an avid outdoorsman and a devoted Leatherman owner, and he used to rodeo at Western Texas College. He got his start singing country songs in Lubbock, Texas, and he cites AC/DC and the Indigo Girls as heavy influences—two very different ends of the spectrum that you can hear meeting in the middle of his sound.
Sharing the bill are Ronnie and The Redwoods, a West Texas Americana/Rock band also from Lubbock. Their lyrics draw on the blues, folk, and country of the high plains, and they describe their writing as honest and earthy. They cite The White Stripes, Tyler Childers, John Prine, and the Red Dirt scene as influences, and they blend folk, country, rock n roll, and grunge into a sound of their own. Between the two acts, you've got a good stretch of West Texas music on one stage.
