A self-guided historic homes tour exploring the working-class history of the Poplar Grove neighborhood, featuring homes from the 1930s to 1960s.
Preservation Utah brings its annual Historic Homes Tour to the Poplar Grove neighborhood on Saturday, October 17, from 10 AM to 2 PM. The tour starts at Art Castle, 915 W. 100 S., and from there you'll walk through a neighborhood on the city's west side that grew out of working-class, agricultural and industrial roots.
It's a self-guided walk, so you set your own pace. The route opens the doors of privately owned homes built between the 1930s and the 1960s—Victorian cottages, Craftsman bungalows and California ranch homes built for working families. Along the way, you'll get inside several private residences that are otherwise closed to the public, plus three landmarks. One is the Chapman Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library, the only city branch funded by Andrew Carnegie; another is the Fisher Mansion carriage house.
Preservation Utah is the state's only nonprofit dedicated to historic preservation, and they've been running this tour across the Salt Lake Valley for more than 50 years. This is the third year in a row they've brought the walk to the west side. It's worth keeping in mind that none of the homes on the route are wheelchair accessible.
