Screening of the National Theatre Live production of 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses', with Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner, directed by Marianne Elliott.
National Theatre Live is bringing Les Liaisons Dangereuses to Broadway Centre Cinemas on Saturday, November 21, from 12 PM to 3 PM. It's a filmed stage production from London's National Theatre, so you're watching a live performance on the big screen rather than a movie made for cinema.
On stage, Lesley Manville plays the Marquise de Merteuil and Aidan Turner takes on the Vicomte de Valmont. They're working from Christopher Hampton's adaptation, directed by Marianne Elliott. The whole thing was filmed live at the National Theatre, and the cameras are placed to give the cinema audience what they call the 'best seat in the house'—close enough to see the actors' faces and catch the small moments that usually get lost from the back of a theater.
If you're not familiar with how this works, National Theatre Live has been doing this since 2009, bringing acclaimed British theater to more than 5.5 million viewers worldwide. Their catalog includes Phèdre with Helen Mirren, Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch, and Yerma with Billie Piper. The Tanner Humanities Center has been screening their productions here in Salt Lake since 2010, and this one is the next to come through.
