Free weekly community jazz jam for teen and adult musicians, with a guided workshop on a jazz standard followed by a coached jam led by professional mentors.
Learner's Jazz Jam is running on Tuesday nights at AMP Studio in Salt Lake City, and the next session is October 29. It's a free community program run by AMP (Applied Music Programs), and it's designed as a bridge between private lessons, school ensembles, and the kind of traditional jazz jam sessions you'll find around town. The whole thing is built for teen and adult musicians to build confidence playing jazz and to expand their repertoire, improvisation, and ensemble skills in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
Each gathering opens with a guided workshop on a jazz standard, and then everyone puts those new concepts into practice alongside professional jazz mentors in a coached jam. Two working members of Utah's jazz community lead every session, which runs about 90 minutes and splits into two tracks: a Foundation Track at a slower pace with more support, and a Fast Track for a more traditional jam experience. The repertoire is built around a shared set of standards, with a new tune introduced each week.
