Guided tour led by historian Ken Cannon through the historic Jewish cemetery sections of the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations.
Preservation Utah is taking a walk through the Salt Lake City Cemetery on Saturday, October 24, for a tour of the city's historic Jewish graves. Historian Ken Cannon leads the group, and the whole thing runs from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
The tour focuses on two Jewish sections within the cemetery—the ones associated with the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations—and uses the stories, symbols, and people buried there to trace the roots of Salt Lake City's Jewish community. Along the way, Cannon explains Jewish burial traditions and the cultural symbols you'll see on the headstones, and talks about the role Jewish businesses played in Utah's economy. One of the stories he highlights is that of Herbert Auerbach, son of department store tycoon Samuel Auerbach, whose family arrived in Utah before the transcontinental railroad was even finished.
