Free public screening of the documentary 'American Movie' followed by a discussion led by SLCC faculty at the Center for Arts and Media.
SLCC South City Campus is screening American Movie on Tuesday, October 27, at 6 PM. It's part of Salt Lake City Community College's Free Film Series, which opens the campus cinema to the public with no tickets required. The screening is in the Screening Room (1-106A) at the Center for Arts and Media, 1575 South State Street.
American Movie follows aspiring filmmaker Mark Borchardt, who spends years trying to finance his dream project by finally finishing Coven (1997), a micro-budget horror film he'd abandoned years before. It's a documentary that spends as much time on Borchardt's life and his family as it does on the movie he's trying to make, and it's widely known as one of the funniest and most sincere documentaries ever put to film. If you've never seen it, it's a great place to start with the genre.
One of the best parts of the series is what happens after the credits roll. Every screening is followed by a discussion led by SLCC faculty, so you can stick around and talk through the film with other people in the room. It's a good way to get a bit more context on what you just watched without having to do the homework yourself.
