Exhibition inspired by carnival sideshows that celebrates the unusual, the grotesque and the fantastical at the Urban Arts Gallery.
Freak Show is running at the Urban Arts Gallery in downtown Salt Lake City through November 1. Presented by the Utah Arts Alliance, the exhibition opened on September 29 and stays up for a little over a month, so you've got plenty of time to catch it if you're around the Rio Grande Street area.
The show takes its name from the carnival sideshow tradition, and that's exactly where it draws its energy. It's a look at the strange, the uncanny, and the gloriously abnormal, with work that leans into the unusual, the creepy, the grotesque, and the fantastical. If you've ever had a thing for curiosities, oddities, and the macabre, this is right in that wheelhouse. It celebrates what exists outside the norm, and it doesn't shy away from the weirder side of things.
Walking through, you'll find distorted forms, surreal characters, and a good dose of dark humor. There are exaggerated bodies, eerie narratives, and visual spectacles that feel alluring and unsettling at the same time. The whole thing is an invitation to honor the outsider and celebrate art that refuses to behave, so expect things to get a bit off-kilter.
