Free screening of William Friedkin's 1980 film Cruising, starring Al Pacino, followed by a zoom Q&A from the Utah Queer Film Festival.
Utah Film Center is screening Cruising on Wednesday, October 21, at 7 PM. It's part of the Utah Queer Film Festival's year-round series, and the screening is presented with support from Salt Lake City Leather Pride. The movie is 102 minutes long, and once the credits roll, the night continues with a Zoom Q&A moderated by the Utah Queer Film Festival team.
Cruising came out in 1980 and was directed by William Friedkin, who also did The Exorcist, The French Connection, and The Boys in the Band. It's a gay leather slasher that stars Al Pacino as a young police rookie. His captain, played by Paul Sorvino, orders him to go undercover in New York's S&M subculture to lure a killer out of the shadows. The deeper he sinks into that underworld, the more he risks losing his own identity. The film took its premise and title from Gerald Walker's novel, and it's still as challenging and remarkable today as it was when it first came out, with Pacino's haunted lead performance at the center of it all.
