Community art program in which visual artists bring up to two pieces and an artist statement for a public vote and a chance to exhibit at the gallery.
Connect returns to the Urban Arts Gallery on Friday, November 13, from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM. It's a statewide community art program built to celebrate and nurture the artistic spirit of Utah's visual artists, and it's open to all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels. That means it welcomes photographers, painters, sculptors, and mixed-media creators alike.
If you're an artist, the format is straightforward: you bring up to two pieces of your work and a brief artist statement to go with them. The community then votes for their favorite pieces, and the winner gets to exhibit their work at the gallery for a full month. It's as much about the people as it is about the art, with the voting part turning the whole thing into a shared experience rather than just a quiet walk through a room.
If you're not an artist, you still have a role to play. You're the one voting, so you get to spend the evening looking at what people from across the state have brought in and deciding which pieces stand out to you. It's a good way to see a wide range of styles and mediums in one night, and since it's open to all levels, you'll see work from established artists and people just starting out side by side.
