Free pre-K science and astronomy classes for toddlers, with weekly themes like soil, leaves, pumpkins and bats, combining reading, art, activities and experiments.
AstroTots are back at Clark Planetarium for their fall session, running from Tuesday, September 29, through Thursday, November 5. It's a six-week series of pre-K science and astronomy classes for toddlers, with sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30 AM in The Learning Space. Each hour packs in a reading, a science experiment, an art project, and a snack, so it's a full morning for the little ones.
The curriculum follows the season. Week 1 starts with soil, followed by leaves in Week 2 and pumpkins in Week 3. Week 4 moves to water with "Drip Drop," Week 5 is all about bats, and Week 6 wraps up with life cycles. It's a nice way to see the world change outside the window while the kids are working through it inside.
There are a few things to keep in mind before you sign up. The classes are tailored for children aged 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 who haven't entered kindergarten yet; if your little one is younger, the planetarium directs them toward the Little Dippers program instead. It's also not a drop-off session—a parent or guardian has to stay for the whole hour. Each registration covers one child and their adult.
