Free exhibition of large-scale oil paintings by Arash Shoveiri that fuse ancient mythology with modern technology.
Arash Shoveiri is showing Echoes of the Human Condition at the Center for Arts & Media on the Salt Lake Community College South City Campus, 1575 S. 200 E. The exhibition runs from October 8 through November 20, 2026, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 8, from 5 PM to 7 PM.
Shoveiri is an Iranian-American painter based in Sandy, Utah, who trained at the Tehran School of Fine Arts and Tehran University of Art. His work consists of large-scale oil paintings that put ancient mythology and modern technology in the same frame. You'll see an Assyrian colossus wearing VR goggles and holding an iPhone on a city street, and an Aztec prince glowing against gold leaf. Stone figures appear alongside connective cables, deserts, and contemporary cityscapes, bringing historical imagery into conversation with the systems that shape life today—the internet, attention economies, and artificial intelligence.
There's a slow pace to the work that's worth keeping in mind: each painting takes about six months to complete. The images ask what remains of shared histories when they're set against forces that feel beyond human comprehension. Because they're large-scale oils, they're the kind of pieces you can stand in front of for a while and still find new details.
