Collaborative woodblock print exhibition in which local artists and community members carve blocks to create a continuous serpent for the Year of the Snake.
Saltgrass Printmakers are showing An Exquisite Corpse at the Gallery at Library Square through November 6, with the exhibition running since September 19. It's on the fourth floor of the Salt Lake City Public Library's main branch, 210 E. 400 South.
The whole thing takes its name from the Surrealist drawing game, where people contribute to a picture in sequence and only see a fragment of what the person before them did. Saltgrass scaled that up for this project. They invited local artists and community members to carve individual 24-by-24-inch woodblocks in honor of 2025, the Chinese Year of the Snake. Each person was given a specific starting and ending point so the image flowed continuously from one block to the next, though no one knew what the overall composition was becoming as they worked. The blocks were printed together during a community event, and that's when the full image—a serpent shaped by many hands—was revealed for the first time.
Saltgrass Printmakers is a nonprofit, community-focused print shop founded here in Salt Lake City in November 2003 by Erik Brunvand, Sandy Brunvand and Stefanie Dykes. They've been around for over two decades, and they picked up the Salt Lake City Mayor's Artists Award in 2010.
