Monthly series of experimental short works by local artists across dance, music, film and spoken word, each followed by a Q&A.
12 Minutes Max returns to the Salt Lake City Public Library on Sunday, October 18, from 2 PM to 3 PM. It's a monthly performance series curated by the library, held on the third Sunday of each month, and run in memory of Paul Reynolds, an artist, librarian, and patron of the arts. The format comes from a program that started with On the Boards in Seattle: experimental short works by local artists across different disciplines—dance, music, film, and spoken word—each followed by a Q&A with the artist. The title tells you exactly what to expect: a few short pieces, each with a strict time limit, and a chance to ask the people behind them how they made them.
This month's lineup brings together three very different things in one hour. Greg Nielsen performs on saxophone and composition. Mustafa Bin Javed screens his short film, The Ashes. And vbot puts on a live VR painting performance, with dance, lights, and projections set to Rossini's Guillaume Tell: Overture. Between the saxophone, the film, and the VR painting, you'll see three different ways of working in a single afternoon, and you'll get to hear from each artist afterward.
Because the pieces are short, the whole thing moves quickly. You get a bit of music, a bit of film, and a bit of digital art, all in one sitting. If you've ever wondered how a VR painting actually comes together or what goes into a short film, the Q&A is where you'll find out. It's a good way to see local work from a few different disciplines without having to commit to a full night of one thing.
