A multi-artist show reinterpreting the songs of Joni Mitchell, co-produced by Lail Arad and Jesca Hoop, with pianist Richard Sears and special guest Naima Bock.
The Songs of Joni Mitchell comes to The Wedgewood Rooms on Sunday 27 September, with Jesca Hoop and Lail Arad leading the night, joined by pianist Richard Sears and special guest Naima Bock. It's a multi-artist show that reinterprets rather than replicates Joni Mitchell's songs, carried by the voices of artists she continues to inspire.
Lail Arad conceived and curated the project to mark Mitchell's 80th birthday, starting as a single gig at London's Roundhouse. It grew into an ongoing tour after two sold-out runs and widespread critical acclaim. The first song Arad ever performed on stage was Mitchell's 'Big Yellow Taxi', and that Roundhouse debut featured Emeli Sandé, Vashti Bunyan and Kate Stables of This Is The Kit, with Cerys Matthews compering. Arad, Hoop and Stables went on to record an EP of Mitchell's songs as a result.
Co-producers Arad and Hoop have welcomed a long list of guests at every port since, including poet laureate Simon Armitage, Lisa Hannigan, Gail Ann Dorsey, Rachel Sermanni and Sam Amidon, with Richard Sears as a regular accompanist. Jesca Hoop also fronted Legend: The Joni Mitchell Story, the award-winning six-part BBC Radio documentary and podcast about Mitchell's life.
