Cactus and Succulent Show

The Portsmouth & District Branch of the British Cactus and Succulent Society are holding their Cactus and Succulent Show at Christ Church Hall on Saturday 26 September, from 10:00 to 16:00. It's one of two such gatherings they put on each year, so if you missed the first, this is the other chance to catch them.

They describe these days as social occasions rather than straight exhibitions, which gives you a good sense of how they work. Instead of just looking at plants from a distance, you walk among a wide array of cacti and succulents, many of them prize winners, all shown by local branch members. The experts stand by to talk about the plants and answer questions, so it's as much about the conversation as it is about the display. If you've ever wondered why a particular species looks the way it does or how to keep one alive on your windowsill, this is the place to ask.

There are refreshments served throughout the day, and a large number of plants are available to take home, so you can leave with something for your own collection. It's a relaxed, low-pressure sort of afternoon, whether you're a seasoned grower or just curious about the plants. The hall is Christ Church Hall, on London Road in Cosham, Hampshire PO6 3NB.

Entry is £1.50, and children aged 12 and under go free. The show runs from 10:00 to 16:00, but keep in mind that plant sales close at 15:30, so if you're planning on taking something home, you'll want to get there a bit before the end.
