AJ Bell Great South Run

The AJ Bell Great South Run returns to Portsmouth on Sunday 18 October 2026, with the main 10-mile race starting at Avenue De Caen on Southsea Common and finishing on the seafront near Southsea Castle. It's been running since 1990 and bills itself as probably the world's favourite 10-mile road race, and the biggest and best running event across the South coast. It's open to seasoned athletes and first-time runners alike, so it works whether you're chasing a PB or just want to get out there.

The course is flat and fast, with sea views and salty air throughout. You'll run past some of Portsmouth's maritime landmarks: the Historic Dockyard, HMS Victory, the naval base, Spinnaker Tower, the D-Day Memorial and Canoe Lake, with the Isle of Wight visible across the water. The day is built for atmosphere, with several start waves to get everyone off the line and music and entertainment along the route. When you cross the finish line, you get a medal and a T-shirt.

It's not just the 10-miler, either. The event also runs a Great South 5K and Junior & Mini races, so if ten miles feels like a stretch, there are shorter distances to choose from. The main race starts at 10:35 am, and entry is £53.
