Award-winning saxophone sextet The Moanin' Frogs plays jazz, pop and classical pieces in the Friends of Chamber Music Beyond Classic Series.
The Moanin' Frogs are playing Lincoln Performance Hall at Portland State University on Sunday, October 18, from 3 PM to 5 PM. They're an award-winning saxophone sextet that covers the full range from soprano to bass, and they've built their name on jumping between jazz, pop, classical and everything in between. Critics describe their playing as equal parts talent and joy, combining high-level skill with a mischievous sense of fun, whether they're reimagining a Mozart overture or tearing up a New Orleans jam. Their stage presence is noted for its contagious energy and dazzling precision.
The program they've put together for this afternoon is a long, wide-ranging list that touches on just about every style they claim. You'll hear Wedding Dance from Hasseneh, a Ragtime Medley, In The Mood, Symphony No. 2, Melancholy Blues, El Cascabel, Johnny B. Goode, Bugler's Holiday, Toccata and Fugue in D minor, Malaguena, Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera, Largo al factotum from The Barber of Seville, Queen of the Night from The Magic Flute, Danny Boy, and Don't Stop Believin'. It's a set that moves from opera arias and classical staples to pop and jazz standards, all played by six saxophones.
