The centrepiece is Every Purpose Under The Heaven, an oratorio by Howard Goodall. He wrote it to mark the 400th anniversary of the 1611 King James Bible, and it works its way through texts from Genesis right through to Revelation. It's a rhythmic, expressive piece, and for this performance the choir is joined by a small instrumental ensemble and two soloists: soprano Jessica Farrow and tenor Mark Hounsell.
If Goodall's name doesn't ring a bell, you've almost certainly heard his work. He's well known for his choral writing, but he's also the man behind the music for Mr Bean, The Vicar of Dibley, Red Dwarf and Blackadder. Around the oratorio, the choir will perform a selection of pieces by other composers, including John Rutter, Dan Forrest, Marta Keen, James Whitbourn and Patrick Hawes.
There's an interval with refreshments and a raffle, so it's worth bringing some cash if you fancy a drink or a ticket. Tickets are £13 in advance from www.ticketsource.co.uk/Plymouth-Phoenix-Chorale or £15 on the door, and under-18s go in for free. St Peter's is in Wyndham Square, Stonehouse, PL1 5EG.
