The Original Plymouth Proms, a Last Night of the Proms concert with over 150 musicians, presented by South West Philharmonia and Chorus.
South West Philharmonia and Chorus bring the Plymouth Last Night of the Proms to St Andrew's Minster on Saturday 12 September, from 19:30 to 22:00. It's a big one: more than 150 musicians on stage at once, which is a fair few to fit inside the Minster. The evening goes by the name The Original Plymouth Proms, and it's been running for more than a decade, with the organisers describing it as a night that brings generations together through live music.
The programme mixes contemporary and classical repertoire, so you'll hear Eric Whitacre alongside Prokofiev, Holst and Elgar. It's that blend of the newer and the older that carries the night, and it all builds towards the flag-waving finale that's become a Last Night of the Proms tradition. To make the most of the space, the Minster is fitted with large projection screens, so you can see the action from wherever you're sitting.
Behind it all is the South West Philharmonia and Chorus, the ensemble that puts the whole thing together. With over 150 musicians on the bill, it's a proper orchestral and choral night rather than a small chamber group. The music runs from the contemporary to the classical, and the whole thing is built around the Last Night of the Proms format, which means the evening starts with the more composed repertoire and works its way towards the big, communal finish.
