Devonport Open Days

Devonport Open Days are back at Devonport Royal Dockyard on Friday 24 July, with the gates open to the public for the day. It's a joint effort between the Royal Navy and Babcock International Group, and if you've never been, it's one of those Plymouth days that lets you inside a place you usually only see from the fence.

The dockyard is HMNB Devonport, the UK's largest naval base and the only site in the country that handles the deep maintenance and refit of the Royal Navy's nuclear-powered submarines. On the day, you get behind-the-scenes access to the historic and operational areas where thousands of engineers, technicians, and defence specialists work. It's a good look at the sovereign capability that keeps the fleet running.

There's a fair bit to do while you're there. You'll find hands-on STEM activities for all ages, military assets to explore, displays, and demonstrations throughout the site. One of the better parts is the chance to step onboard participating Royal Navy vessels and see them from the inside. The whole thing is built around the people, engineering, and innovation that keep the nation safe, and it's aimed at inspiring the next generation of engineers.

It's free to attend, so it's an easy one to drop into. Just keep in mind there are two dates: the public day is Friday 24 July, while Thursday 23 July is for the families of staff. If you're coming from the public side, the 24th is your day.
