Live Sogetsu ikebana demonstration by master instructor Ken Katayama, recreating a prize-winning work by Sogetsu founder Sofu Teshigahara.
Ken Katayama is coming to the Carnegie Museum of Art on Saturday, November 7, for a live Sogetsu ikebana demonstration. He's a master instructor from the Sogetsu headquarters in Tokyo, and the session is organized in collaboration with Sogetsu Pittsburgh.
Katayama has been with the Sogetsu school since 1962 and opened his own school in Fukuoka in 1971. He served as World Convention Chairperson for the 11th Ikebana International World Convention in 2017 and received a Fukuoka City Cultural Award in 2021. The demonstration brings to life a Carnegie Prize-winning presentation by Sofu Teshigahara, the artist who founded Sogetsu ikebana in 1927. Teshigahara's work is featured in If the word we:, part of the 59th Carnegie International, so the demonstration ties directly into the museum's own collection.

It's a live demonstration, meaning you'll see the work being created in front of you rather than just viewing a finished piece. English translation is available during the session, so you'll be able to follow along even if you're not familiar with the terminology. The demonstration takes place in the Art Theater at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, from 3 PM to 5 PM. Tickets are $40, or $30 for Carnegie Museums members.
