Kickoff session for the National History Day Pittsburgh competition, where students and teachers explore the 2027 theme and primary source research.
National History Day Pittsburgh kicks off its next cycle at the Heinz History Center on Friday, Oct. 30, from 9:30 AM to 12 PM. It's the starting gun for the annual competition that sends students into the archives to build history projects from the ground up, and this session is where the whole thing gets moving.
During the kickoff, students and teachers get their first look at the 2027 theme, Innovation in History: Impact, Influence, Change. From there, the session covers the practical side of the work: where to track down primary sources and how to actually use them. A veteran judge will also be on hand to talk about what makes a strong entry, which is the kind of inside track that's hard to find anywhere else.
If you're coming with a student, it's worth arriving a little earlyโcoffee and pastries are served before the program begins. Once the session wraps up, you can take a self-guided tour of the exhibition Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation, which fits right in with the theme the students will be working around all year.
