Free screening of the documentary 'Brothers in Blood: Black in Vietnam' followed by a discussion with the filmmaker and a Vietnam veteran.
Heinz History Center is screening Brothers in Blood: Black in Vietnam on Wednesday, Nov. 4, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The film is part of the museum's From Slavery to Freedom series, presented by the African American Program in partnership with the Veterans Breakfast Club. After the screening, there's a discussion with the filmmaker, Joseph Puleo, Samuel W. Black, director of the Museum of African American History, and Vietnam veteran Dennis Hughes.
Brothers in Blood follows Black Americans who fought two wars in the 1960s and '70s: one overseas in Vietnam and another at home in the civil rights struggle. As disproportionate numbers of Black men were drafted and sent to the front lines, the racism they faced in the United States followed them abroad. Drawing on firsthand testimony, the documentary examines discrimination within the military and the lasting physical, emotional, and social consequences veterans faced upon returning home.
