Monthly Lunch Pail Lecture in which Homewood Cemetery historian Jennie Benford shares little-known facts and anecdotes from the cemetery's 150-year history.
The Frick Pittsburgh Museums & Gardens is hosting Secrets of The Homewood Cemetery on Thursday, December 3, from 12 PM to 1 PM in the Community Room. It's part of the Lunch Pail Lectures, a new monthly series of short public talks that bring local history to life, with subjects ranging from current exhibitions to the Frick family and the city itself.
Homewood Cemetery opened in 1878 as both a cemetery and an urban park, and since then it's become the final resting place for many famous Pittsburghers. The talk is led by the cemetery's own historian, Jennie Benford, who draws on the little-known facts and anecdotes that make up nearly 150 years of its history. If you've walked through Homewood before, you know it's more than just a place for monuments—it's a piece of the city's landscape that holds a lot of stories most of us never hear.
True to the name, this is a midday affair. You're encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch or order from The Café at the Frick, so you can eat while you listen. Admission to the Frick is free, though Clayton tours and special exhibitions require a ticket.
