Free screening of Nicolas Winding Refn's neo-noir 'Drive' for members at the Phoenix Art Museum, part of the 'The Color of Noir' film series.
The Color of Noir is screening Drive (2011) at the Phoenix Art Museum on Sunday, November 8, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The film is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and stars Ryan Gosling as a Hollywood stuntman known only as Driver, who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. It's a tough, hard-edged, neo-noir art house feature, extremely violent and very stylish, with European art and exploitation influences. It's also noted for its retro, 80s-leaning europop synth soundtrack, Gosling's command performance, and for being the breakthrough film of cult Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn.
The screening is part of The Color of Noir, a film series at the museum that programs new and classic works by local and global filmmakers, chosen for the way they speak to the museum's collection and exhibitions. The series sits alongside the museum's other screen and stage programs, which include the Bolshoi Ballet and Great Art on Screen.

If you're familiar with the neo-noir tradition, you'll recognize the fingerprints of Michael Mann's Thief, David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, and Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction in the way Drive handles its atmosphere and its crime-underworld setting. It's a movie that spends as much time on the mood and the music as it does on the plot, so it fits right in with the museum's approach to cinema. The screening runs from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 8, and tickets are free for members and $10 for non-members.
