Screening of Tim Burton's 1993 stop-motion film 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' at the historic Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix, with proceeds benefiting the venue.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is coming to the Orpheum Theatre on Tuesday, October 27, for a screening of the 1993 stop-motion classic. The film runs about an hour and sixteen minutes, rated PG, and it's being presented by the Friends of the Orpheum Theatre in partnership with Downtown Phoenix, Inc. All proceeds go back to the venue, so your ticket helps keep the place going.
If you've seen it a dozen times, you know the story: Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, gets bored with his annual routine of frightening people in the real world. When he accidentally stumbles upon Christmas Town, he gets a new lease on life and plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus, only to discover that even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry. It's a movie that works just as well as a Halloween watch as it does a Christmas one, which makes it a good fit for a late-October screening.
Beyond the story, the film is known for its stop-motion animation, a wonderfully strange cast of characters, and a score by Danny Elfman. Seeing it in a theater is a different experience than watching it on a TV at homeโthe scale of the animation and the sound of the score are meant for a big screen and a room full of people. The Orpheum is one of the most beautiful and historic theaters in downtown Phoenix, and this is a chance to see the film in one of them.
