Screening of Miloš Forman's 1984 film 'Amadeus', presented in collaboration with the Southwest Shakespeare Company at the Phoenix Art Museum.
Phoenix Art Museum is screening Miloš Forman's Amadeus on Wednesday, October 28, at 6 PM, presented in collaboration with the Southwest Shakespeare Company. It's part of the museum's ongoing film series, which brings in new and classic works by local and global filmmakers that tie into its collection and exhibitions, alongside performances through its Bolshoi Ballet and Great Art on Screen series.
Forman's 1984 adaptation of Peter Shaffer's play was one of the big cultural events of the late eighties: a lavish saga of genius, rivalry, and treachery that worked as both a critical triumph and a box-office hit. It ended up taking home eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The story is framed in a nineteenth-century insane asylum, where an aged Antonio Salieri looks back on the events of three decades earlier, when the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart first gained favor in the court of Emperor Joseph II. Incensed that God would bless such a vulgar young whippersnapper with divine genius, Salieri devises a duplicitous scheme that becomes the downfall of them both.
