Free screening of the Coen brothers' neo-noir 'Blood Simple' at the Phoenix Art Museum within the 'The Color of Noir' film series.
The Phoenix Art Museum is screening Blood Simple on Wednesday, November 4, as part of its The Color of Noir film series. The movie starts at 6 PM, and it's free for members and $10 for non-members.
Blood Simple was the Coen brothers' first feature, a hard-boiled neo-noir set in Texas where a sleazy bar owner unleashes a wave of violence. M. Emmet Walsh plays a slippery private eye in a yellow suit and cowboy hat, and Frances McDormand makes her film debut. Cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld traded the black-and-white chiaroscuro of traditional noir for neon signs and jukebox colors, and Carter Burwell's score helped reinvent the genre for a new generation. It's the film that put Joel and Ethan Coen on the map, and it still holds up as a tight, mean-spirited piece of crime cinema.

It sits alongside the venue's Bolshoi Ballet and Great Art on Screen programs, so if you're already following those, this is right in the same neighborhood. The screening is at the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix on Wednesday, November 4, at 6 PM; tickets are free for members and $10 for non-members.
