Weekly Thursday night of live jazz with Charles Lewis and his trio at The Nash, the downtown Phoenix jazz club.
Charles Lewis & His Trio kick off Jazz Casual Thursday at The Nash on Thursday, October 29, the start of a weekly series that runs through December 31. The trio features Lewis on piano, Max Beckman on bass, and Nick MacGregor on drums. It's a straightforward piano trio setup, and because it's a weekly thing, you can catch them more than once over the next few months.
The series takes its name from Jazz Casual, the American TV show from the early 1960s that featured jazz greats like John Coltrane, Ben Webster, Dave Brubeck, Paul Desmond, Elvin Jones, Milt Jackson, Mel TormΓ©, and Vince Guaraldi. The Nash borrows that theme to offer a modern-day chance to hear great jazz live in a casual setting. The nights are fronted by Charles Lewis, who celebrated his 93rd birthday this past August and is known for his long-standing presence in Phoenix's jazz scene and for keeping the music fresh and engaging for audiences of all ages.
The Nash itself is in downtown Phoenix at 110 E Roosevelt St. It's described as a jazz club, educational center, art gallery, and gathering place that has become "the home of real jazz in Arizona."
