Family bike safety rodeo with a small obstacle course and a review of the rules of the road, with free helmets from Phoenix Children's Hospital.
The Ironwood Library is hosting a Bike Safety Rodeo on Saturday, October 24, from 9 AM to 11 AM. It's held in the library parking lot, so it's right out in the open and easy to find. The whole thing is run in partnership with Phoenix Children's Hospital, which will be giving away free helmets while supplies last.
If you've got a kid who's just starting to ride, this is exactly the kind of low-stakes way to get them moving. The main event is a small obstacle course where they can practice steering and braking without any real traffic around them. Along with that, there's a review of the rules of the road—the kind of stuff that's a lot easier to learn in a parking lot than figuring it out on the fly while a minivan is trying to turn right. It's a way to get the basics down in a controlled space before they're out on the street.
Kids are encouraged to bring their own bikes and helmets, but if you show up without them, there's no need to head home. A bike or scooter will be provided for use during the session, so everyone can get comfortable on two wheels before they have to share the road with actual traffic. It's set up so that even the newest riders can participate.
