Hands-on drum workshop led by teaching artist Nick Martinez, where participants explore identity and expression through various percussion instruments.
Nick Martinez leads a hands-on drums workshop at the S'edav Va'aki Museum on Thursday, November 5, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. It's part of the museum's Art in the Evening series, which runs a sequence of workshops throughout the year. This one is a collaboration with the Phoenix Conservatory of Music, and the whole session is built around getting you behind the instruments rather than just watching from the side.
Martinez brings a wide collection from the Conservatory for everyone to use. You'll find bongos, tambourines, African drums, shakers, cymbals, a full drum kit, and electronic drums all in the same room. The idea is to let you experiment with different sounds and rhythms, and he'll even show how to turn found objects into an auditory story. The session is framed as a way to explore your sense of identity and express yourself through music, so it's as much about playing as it is about listening.
