Teen hangout session All About Teens that explores art and dating violence awareness with the IN THEIR SHOES program for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
All About Teens is back at the Ocotillo Library and Workforce Literacy Center on Wednesday, October 28, from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. This one is part of the library's regular teen hangout, which runs every second and fourth Wednesday and brings together young people to explore music, coding, new games and art—no experience required. This month, the session falls under Paint Phoenix Purple, the city's observation of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, presented in partnership with the City of Phoenix Human Services - Victim Services Department.
The activity they're running is called IN THEIR SHOES®, an interactive program that helps young people think through dating violence and healthy relationships. Instead of just listening to a presentation, you follow one of six teen characters, each based on real-life situations. The stories touch on things like technology abuse, pregnancy, homophobia and stalking, and as you follow them, you make choices on their behalf as they navigate their friends, family and support systems.
It's a program used across the country, and the organizers say it's designed to spark meaningful conversations and build awareness, empathy and safety skills in a supportive environment. Because it's part of the broader All About Teens series, it's open to anyone who wants to drop in and get involved.
