Free evening of excerpts from the new English-language chamber opera 'What Is Yours' by Spyros Syrmos, performed by Everyman Opera's singers with piano.
Everyman Opera are bringing excerpts from a new chamber opera, What Is Yours, to Summertown Arts on Thursday 29 October. It's an English-language work by Greek composer Spyros Syrmos, with a libretto by Oxford-based writer John Tatlow, who also runs Everyman Opera. The story follows an encounter between Muhammad, Princess Noor, and the pre-Islamic goddess Al-‘Uzzā, and it looks at power, family, and choice through their meeting.
The evening is built around the opera's principal arias and a final trio, performed by Everyman Opera's singers with piano. It's intended as an introduction to the full work as it develops, and as a look at the company's approach to English-language, piano-led opera written for small casts and close audiences. The singers on the night are baritone Flávio Lauria, sopranos Mehreen Shah and Phoebe Edwards, with Maya Soltan on piano.
