The Oxford Bach Choir, conducted by Benjamin Nicholas, performs Bach's Mass in B minor with soloists Áine Smith, Lucy Gibbs, Archie Inns and Thomas Butler.
The Oxford Bach Choir are back at the Sheldonian Theatre on Saturday 5 December, performing Bach's Mass in B minor. It's a big one for them — the Mass is one of the towering masterpieces of the choral repertoire, a work that brings together the full range of Bach's musical imagination. The choir is conducted by Benjamin Nicholas, and they're joined by the period-instrument ensemble Instruments of Time and Truth.
On the solo front, there are two sopranos, Áine Smith and Lucy Gibbs, tenor Archie Inns and bass Thomas Butler, with François Cloete on organ. The choir itself is a large amateur one, around 150 singing members, and it's been around since 1896 when it was founded by Basil Harwood. It's regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the UK, and the Sheldonian is its regular home, where it performs alongside professional orchestras and soloists.
Their wider repertoire goes well beyond Bach, too. They've taken on major choral works like Brahms's Requiem and Rachmaninov's All Night Vigil (Vespers), and they run a popular Carols for All concert. This Mass in B minor performance sits right in that tradition of large-scale choral music they've built their reputation on.
