The Choir of The Queen's College, Oxford and the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Owen Rees, perform Handel's Messiah at the Sheldonian Theatre.
The Choir of The Queen's College and the Academy of Ancient Music are bringing Handel's Messiah to the Sheldonian Theatre on Friday 4 December, with Owen Rees conducting. It's a pairing that's worked before, and this performance continues their collaboration.
Messiah is a big one for the Christmas season, and it's easy to see why. First heard in Dublin in 1741, it traces Christ's life from the Old Testament prophecies through his birth, passion and resurrection, and it still holds the 'Hallelujah Chorus' as one of its most recognisable moments. The choir and orchestra are taking the whole thing through, so you'll hear it from start to finish.
On the solo side, the line-up is Rowan Pierce on soprano, Esther Lay on mezzo-soprano, Ted Black on tenor and James Atkinson on baritone. They'll be joined by the Academy of Ancient Music, an orchestra with a worldwide reputation for baroque and classical music, led by Owen Rees, who's been described as 'one of the most energetic and persuasive voices' in the field. Previous Messiahs by this pairing, with star-studded soloists, have sold out months in advance.
