Screening of the survival thriller 'Whalefall', directed by Brian Duffield and starring Josh Brolin, at Vue Cinema Oxford.
Whalefall is screening at Vue Cinema in Oxford from Friday 16 October to Thursday 22 October, so you've got a full week to catch it. It's a survival thriller directed by Brian Duffield, and the premise is one of those that's hard to believe until you're actually watching it: a scuba diver, out searching for his deceased father's remains, gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale. From that point on, he's got exactly one hour to find a way out before his oxygen runs out.
It's a tight, claustrophobic setup. The whole thing takes place inside the whale, and the clock is ticking the entire time, which keeps the tension high. The story doesn't just stop at the survival part, either; the diver has reached a point where he's given up on life, and it's in this unlikely and dangerous spot that he finds a reason to keep going. It's as much about that shift in head-space as it is about the escape.
The cast is a big draw here. Austin Abrams takes the lead, and he's joined by Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd. With a name like Brolin in the mix, it's a production that feels like it's playing for keeps rather than just leaning on the gimmick of the plot. The film is certified 15, so it's aimed at an older audience.
