Screening of the documentary about the 2021 Facebook leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen, presented as a sequel to The Social Network.
The Social Reckoning is at Curzon Oxford tonight, Friday 23 October, starting at 8.20pm. It's a sequel to The Social Network, and it picks up the story from a very different angle: the 2021 Facebook leak.
If you remember the first one, it was about the early days of Facebook and the legal battles over who actually built it. This one moves forward a good few years to the whistleblower Frances Haugen, who came forward with a trove of internal documents that painted a pretty bleak picture of what the company knew about its own platform. The film dramatises that leak, and it's not just Haugen at the centre — journalist Jeff Horwitz is in there too, as he was one of the people who worked with her to get the story out.
It's a bit of a shift in focus from the original. Where The Social Network was about the climb to the top, The Social Reckoning is about what happened once the company had already arrived, and the fallout when someone on the inside decided to talk. If you've followed the story in the news, you'll recognise the names and the general shape of it, but seeing it played out as a drama gives it a different kind of weight.

The screening runs for 112 minutes, so you're in for just under two hours. It starts at 8.20pm at Curzon Oxford, which puts it in the evening slot rather than a matinee, so it's an easy one to fit in after work if you're around the city centre. If you're planning to go, just keep in mind the start time — 8.20pm is a bit later than your usual cinema slot, so you've got plenty of time to get there without rushing.
