The Mozart Symphony Orchestra screens 'The Snowman' with live orchestral accompaniment, plus 'Paddington Bear's First Concert', narrated by Philip Mackenzie.
The Mozart Symphony Orchestra bring The Snowman back to the Sheldonian Theatre on Monday 21 December, with three screenings on the same day: 13:30, 15:30, and 17:30. The film runs on the big screen with the orchestra playing the score live, and the song Walking in the Air — the one Aled Jones made famous — is part of it.
It's a bit of an Oxford tradition. The Mozart Symphony Orchestra gave the city its first local performance of The Snowman years ago, and after three sell-out shows, it's become a regular seasonal fixture. The film is Howard Blake's, and the orchestra plays his score right along with it.
There's a second piece on the bill too: Herbert Chappell's Paddington Bear's First Concert, a charming bit for narrator and orchestra that follows the bear rescued from Paddington Station by the Brown family on his first trip to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall. Together they run about an hour with no interval, and the whole thing is recommended for ages five and over.

On the podium are Philip Mackenzie, who conducts and narrates, and soprano Alice Mackenzie. General admission is between £12 and £34, and with the three separate showtimes, you can pick whichever fits your day best.
