Recital by tenor Christoph Prégardien and pianist Pauliina Tukiainen of songs by Schumann, Brahms and Schubert, part of the Oxford International Song Festival.
Christoph Prégardien is back at the Holywell Music Room on Tuesday 20 October, part of the Oxford International Song Festival. He's joined by Finnish pianist Pauliina Tukiainen for a recital called The Great Romantics, and if you've followed the festival over the years, you'll know Prégardien is a long-standing favourite here. He recently celebrated his 70th birthday, and the festival describes him as one of the most memorable recitals they've ever had, with one review calling him 'no finer interpreter' of Schubert.
The programme is a proper tour of the great Romantic lieder. The first half opens with Schumann's Liederkreis, op. 24, followed by songs by Johannes Brahms. The second half is dedicated entirely to Franz Schubert. It's a night built around the big names of the era, and the festival frames it as a celebration of the highs, lows and complications of love in its many and varied forms, told through song.
The whole thing runs for ninety minutes, with a short ten-minute break in the middle. One small thing to keep in mind: the bar isn't open during that interval, so if you're after a drink, it's best to sort it before you sit down. The concert is part of the Oxford International Song Festival's 25th anniversary year, so it's a bit of a milestone for the series as well.
