Sunday morning chamber music concert by the Adderbury Ensemble String Quartet in the historic Holywell Music Room, part of the Oxford Coffee Concerts series.
The Adderbury Ensemble play the Holywell Music Room on Sunday 8 November, as part of the Oxford Coffee Concerts series. It's a string quartet performance, so four players on stage in one of the city's most storied rooms.
The ensemble brings together some of the UK's top musicians, described as among the leading performers in their field, and they're linked to Music in Adderbury. Their repertoire is broad: they play the big names like Beethoven, Mozart and Dvořák, and the more romantic sweep of Elgar and Tchaikovsky, alongside Baroque works by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi and Telemann. It's a wide stretch of ground for one group to cover, from the structured counterpoint of the 1700s through to the late-Romantic era.
They're playing in the Holywell Music Room on Holywell Street, which is widely regarded as the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Europe. Built in 1748, it's hosted performances for more than two centuries and still holds historical ties to Haydn. The room is the home of the Oxford Coffee Concerts, one of the UK's most successful chamber music series, which has run every Sunday morning since 1986. The name comes from the tradition of coffee being served at a local pub before the concert, and the performances are recorded and put on the series' YouTube channel.
