Baritone Konstantin Krimmel and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' 'Songs of Travel', with further songs by Schumann, Brahms and Mandyczewski, at the Oxford International Song Festival.
Konstantin Krimmel and Ammiel Bushakevitz are performing Ralph Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel at the Holywell Music Room on Wednesday 21 October. It's part of the Oxford International Song Festival, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The whole festival is built around the theme of love, with 59 events exploring it in different forms through music and poetry.
The main feature is Songs of Travel, the cycle Vaughan Williams wrote in 1904, but that's not all they're playing. The evening includes further songs by Schumann, Brahms and Eusebius Mandyczewski, so it's a full programme of song rather than just a single work. The whole thing is presented in association with BBC Radio 3's New Generation Artists Scheme and recorded for future broadcast.
Krimmel is a baritone and was a BBC New Generation Artist from 2021 to 2023, and he's established himself as one of the leading baritones of his generation. He and Bushakevitz have worked together before, too: they previously got a standing ovation in the Holywell Music Room for their rendition of ballads by Schubert and Loewe, so they're no strangers to this particular stage.

The festival itself returns each autumn to the Holywell Music Room, which is described as Europe's oldest purpose-built concert hall. This year it also reaches the Levine Building, The Olivier Hall, Garsington Studios at the Wormsley Estate and, for the first time, spaces within the Schwarzman Centre. Artistic Director Sholto Kynoch has promised several world premieres across the festival, and the central weekend was devoted to the music of Franz Schubert.
Tickets range from £10 to £34, and the concert runs from 7:45pm to 9:15pm at the Holywell Music Room on Holywell Street, OX1 3SD.
