Screening of the film 'Ghost' by the Ghost production committee, introduced by Dr Jonathan Clements, at PictureHouse Oxford.
Ghost is coming to PictureHouse in Oxford on Saturday 14 November, as part of the SLA 2026 programme. It's a screening of Ghost in the Shell: Innocence, the 2004 animated sequel to Mamoru Oshii's original Ghost in the Shell. If you've seen the first one, you'll recognise the world it returns to: a near-future where cybernetic bodies and digital consciousness are the norm, and the line between human and machine is practically gone.
Innocence picks up in that same world, following a cyber-detective investigating a series of suicides among gynoids—humanoid robots that look and act like people. It's a slower, more meditative film than its predecessor, trading some of the original's tension for a heavy focus on philosophy, identity, and what it actually means to be human when your brain is just a piece of software. It's a visually stunning piece of animation, and seeing it on a big screen is the only way to really take in the detail.
What makes this particular showing different from a standard cinema run is the introduction. Every screening is introduced by Dr Jonathan Clements, who'll be there to set the scene before the film starts. If you're not already well-versed in the Ghost in the Shell universe, it's a helpful way to get your bearings before the credits roll. The whole thing is presented by the Ghost production committee, so it's a curated event rather than just a one-off booking.
