Screening of the anime 'A Silent Voice' directed by Naoko Yamada, with an introduction by Dr Jonathan Clements.
A Silent Voice is screening at PictureHouse in Oxford on Thursday 10 November, as part of the SLA 2026 season. It's a 130-minute feature directed by Naoko Yamada, and the screening comes with an introduction by Dr Jonathan Clements, so you'll get a bit of context before the film starts.
The story follows Shoya Ishida, who bullies the new girl in his class, Shoko Nishimiya, because she's deaf. As the teasing goes on, the rest of the class turns on Shoya for his lack of compassion. When they leave elementary school, Shoko and Shoya stop speaking to each other, until an older, wiser Shoya, tormented by his past behaviour, decides he must see Shoko again to atone for his sins.
Yamada directed the film from the manga A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Oima, which ran in the weekly SHONEN MAGAZINE published by KODANSHA. The voices are provided by Miyu Irino, Aoi Yuki and Saori Hayami, and the film carries a 12A certificate. It's a long one, running two hours and ten minutes, so it's worth keeping that in mind if you're planning your evening around it.
