New 2026 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, directed by Georgia Oakley, with screenings at the historic Phoenix Picturehouse.
Sense and Sensibility is playing at Phoenix Picturehouse from Friday 9 October to Thursday 22 October, with daily screenings across the run. It's a new adaptation of Jane Austen's first novel, directed by Georgia Oakley from a script by Diana Reid, and it runs for 132 minutes.
The story follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, who are forced to leave their Sussex estate and move in with a distant relative, where they face romance and money troubles. It's a fresh take on Austen's story of love and sisterhood, and the cast brings together some familiar faces: Caitriona Balfe, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Esme Creed-Miles, Fiona Shaw, George MacKay, Herbert Nordrum and Frank Dillane. Cinematographer Arnaud Potier shot the film using natural light, and the mood is a point of discussion — Sarah Lee's review describes it as moody and overcast, contrasting it unfavourably with Ang Lee's Oscar-winning version.
If you're not sure about the tone, it's worth knowing that the film isn't just at the Phoenix. It's also screening at Curzon Oxford and Vue Cinema, so you've got a few options for where to catch it. The Phoenix itself is a century-old Oxford cinema with two screens and a friendly upstairs bar, and it runs a couple of regulars: 'Phoenix Nights', cult classics handpicked by the team, and a 'Kids' Club' presented with UNICEF.
