Screening of the Roundabout Theatre production of Noël Coward's 1925 comedy 'Fallen Angels', filmed live on stage at Broadway's Todd Haimes Theatre.
Phoenix Picturehouse is screening Fallen Angels by Noël Coward on Sunday 25 October at 2pm. It's not a film in the usual sense: this is a Tony Award-winning Roundabout Theatre production, filmed live on stage at Broadway's Todd Haimes Theatre and brought to the big screen. If you've never come across it, Fallen Angels is Coward's champagne-fresh comedy of bad manners, which shocked and delighted audiences when it premiered back in 1925.
The plot is classic Coward. Two upper-class wives, whose husbands are away for the day, spend the afternoon sharing a few toasts to their pre-marital dalliances with the same man. He might just be on his way from France to visit, and as the drinks flow, old rivalries and past scandals bubble to the surface. It's an intoxicating romp by one of theatre's comedy masters, and having it filmed live on stage means you get the full Broadway performance without having to cross the Atlantic.
The cast is a strong one: Rose Byrne and Kelli O'Hara lead the way, supported by Tracee Chimo, Mark Consuelos, Christopher Fitzgerald and Aasif Mandvi. It's a production that's already picked up a Tony, so the heavy lifting on the acting is well-sorted.
