Screening of Lance Hammer's drama 'Queen at Sea', about a woman whose dementia erodes her ability to communicate, at Oxford's independent cinema UPP.
Queen at Sea is showing at The Ultimate Picture Palace on Cowley Road, with screenings on Saturday 17 October at 8.00pm, Monday 19 October at 5.45pm, and Thursday 22 October at 3.00pm — that last one with descriptive subtitles. It's a 2025 film, 121 minutes long and rated 15, directed by Lance Hammer and starring Juliette Binoche, Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall.
The story follows a woman whose dementia erodes her ability to communicate her inner life, while her husband and daughter struggle to act in her best interest. It's a look at dementia, family, and what consent means when someone can no longer speak for themselves. Hammer describes it as a follow-up to Ballast, which won the Silver Bear Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.
It's playing at The Ultimate Picture Palace, Oxford's oldest independent cinema. It opened in 1911 and has been community-owned since 2022, screening a mix of independent, international and classic films in a cosy single-screen auditorium on Cowley Road. It was named one of BIFA's 15 best cinemas in the UK.
