Screening of Guillermo del Toro's dark fantasy film Pan's Labyrinth at Vue Cinema Oxford.
Pan's Labyrinth is coming to Vue Cinema in Oxford for two screenings: Saturday 31 October at 6.00pm and Tuesday 3 November at 7.30pm. It's Guillermo del Toro's dark fantasy, and if you've never seen it, it's a good place to start on a Halloween weekend.
The story follows Ofelia, a young Spanish girl who moves with her pregnant mother to stay with her stepfather, a captain of a Fascist outpost in Civil War Spain. Ofelia is haunted by fairytales, and she's drawn into the Labyrinth of Pan, where a faun tells her she's the long-lost princess of the underworld. He sets her three tests to regain her identity, while in the real world, guerrillas aided by a spy wage a losing war against the captain's forces. The two worlds run side by side, and the fairytale side is far from a children's story.
Del Toro describes it as a dark fantasy shot through with fear, cruelty and visceral violence, and it doesn't shy away from the grimness of the war it's set against. It's a film that upends the traditional happy-ever-after ethos of fairytales, so it's more of a heavy watch than a light one. It's rated 15, and the runtime is 119 minutes, just under two hours.
