National Theatre Live screening of the revival of Clifford Odets' 'Golden Boy', filmed at the Almeida Theatre and screened with a live string quartet.
National Theatre Live is bringing Golden Boy to Picturehouses in Oxford this November, a filmed production of Clifford Odets' American classic. It's a revival of the 1930s play, set in New York at the height of the Depression, and it follows Joe Bonaparte, a gifted young violinist whose future in music is derailed when a chance at fame and fortune lures him into the brutal world of professional boxing. It's a story about ambition, identity, and the high price of success, and it runs for 180 minutes.
This particular staging was directed by Olivier Award winner Sam Yates and filmed live at the Almeida Theatre. One detail that sets it apart from a standard recording is the music: there's a live string quartet on stage during the screening, so the violin playing that sits at the heart of the story is performed right there in the room rather than just coming through the speakers.

There are two showings to choose from. The first is on Sunday 8 November at 5.00pm, and the second is on Thursday 12 November at 8.00pm. Both are at Picturehouses in Oxford, and since it's a National Theatre Live presentation, you're seeing a professional stage production brought to the cinema screen. It's a three-hour show, so it's a proper evening's commitment rather than a quick trip to the cinema.
